The justifiably popular Toyota RAV4 does just about everything right for most family shoppers.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Toyota RAV4? What does it compare to?
The top-selling crossover SUV in the country is a common sight thanks to its sporty looks, big interior, and wide range of trim levels and engine options. Shop the 2024 RAV4 against the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Nissan Rogue.
Is the 2024 Toyota RAV4 a good SUV?
While a redesign isn’t far off, the 2024 RAV4 remains a strong overall choice. Its good fuel economy in hybrid form and its zippy looks help it earn a 6.5 of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Toyota RAV4?
Most of the changes for 2024 are centered around the Wilderness trim level, which now offers two-tone paint and heated front seats.
Otherwise, the RAV4 moves into 2024 with the same low-slung, edgy style with which this generation debuted back in the 2019 model year. The squared-off front end and low-roof profile give off rugged vibes, which the RAV4 can mostly uphold in TRD Off-Road and Adventure trim levels. Inside, look for a busy, blocky cabin with a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen or an optional 8.0-inch display.
The 203-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 that’s standard across the line provides adequate, if some grumbly, grunt. Better by far is the optional hybrid, which is quicker and can fire off 40 mpg combined. Yep, that’s right: economy-car mpg in an SUV capable of fitting five passengers and their luggage.
The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid lowers its fuel-economy estimate to 38 mpg combined, but it can travel more than 40 miles on a full charge. It’s also the fastest and smoothest of the group, making it a commuting champ. Just try not to pay well over list price for one, as many dealers are wont to ask.
All models have a composed ride and a nimble feel around town. They’re adept highway cruisers, too, aided by an impressive array of standard driver-assistance tech such as adaptive cruise control and active lane control.
The RAV4’s interior doesn’t break records for luxurious trim, but its layout is simple enough and it’s just so spacious. It’s also well-equipped with standard automatic emergency braking and other driver-assistance tech, all of which help it earn terrific crash-test ratings.
How much does the 2024 Toyota RAV4 cost?
Figure around $29,000 for a base RAV4 LE, but it’s worth saving up for the $32,000 or so RAV4 Hybrid LE. Not only does it come with all-wheel drive, its nearly 10-mpg improvement may not take that long for a typical buyer to recover.
The range climbs quickly through dressier XLE, sportier SE and XSE, rugged-looking Adventure, and genuinely rugged TRD Pro models before culminating in the not-that-luxurious Limited.
Where is the 2024 Toyota RAV4 made?
In Georgetown, Kentucky, though plug-in models are shipped over from Japan.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Styling
The RAV4’s rakish lines are aging well.
Is the Toyota RAV4 a good-looking SUV?
It’s still an interesting choice among compact crossover SUVs, even if the 2024 RAV4 is now among the oldest designs in its competitive set. Its stubby, chunky exterior style and dashing cabin net it an 8 on the TCC scale
The blunt front end is emblazoned with cut-outs and complex LED headlights for a busy, racy look. Most versions have blistered fenders with unpainted flares, though contrasting black trim is fitted to top versions. All models have a rugged, sporty look, with a hint of muscularity. The big rearmost roof pillar endows the RAV4 with a sporty look shared with the automaker’s burly 4Runner.
TRD Off-Road and, to a lesser degree, Wilderness versions have a rugged look that stands in contrast to the extra glossy finish bolted to the plug-in hybrid Prime versions.
The inside has a well-conceived look with plentiful small-item storage and unique fabric and plastic choices even on the cheapest LE trim. Toyota doesn’t offer real leather. Its synthetic stuff does a good job imitating the real stuff, though.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Performance
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 is a mild-mannered choice—unless kitted out as a hybrid.
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 isn’t built to thrill in most forms, but that’s just fine with us. It has a comfy enough ride and reasonable acceleration to ensure it a solid 5. Those with S in their name have slightly sharper moves, while hybrids and especially RAV4 Prime versions have impressive acceleration that might net them an extra point if rated independently.
Is the Toyota RAV4 4WD?
Front-wheel drive comes standard at the bottom of the lineup in base 4-cylinder guise Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are all-wheel drive.
Just how power transmits to the rear end varies by version, though. Gas models utilize a conventional system that sends most power forward and can shift it rearward when needed. Higher-trim gas-only versions can even apportion power between each individual rear wheel.
Hybrid and Prime models have an electric motor on the rear axle that engages when slip is detected.
How fast is the Toyota RAV4?
The base 4-cylinder is rated at a decent 203 hp, which conspires with the 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver reasonable acceleration with a minimum of fuss unless pushed hard. At higher engine speeds, this setup can become a bit buzzy.
Hybrid models toss in a battery pack and rear-mounted electric motor that amp things up to 219 hp. They’re quite a bit peppier thanks mostly to a broadened torque band.
The RAV4 Prime models swap in an 18.1-kwh battery pack and an upsized electric motor good for a combined output of 302 hp. They’re positively quick, capable of zipping to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds.
All models have a softly tuned ride with good impact absorption. Hybrid models feel a bit more confident over bumps thanks mostly to their extra heft. All models have quick-responding steering for a nimble feel in town.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Comfort & Quality
The 2024 Toyota RAV4’s sleek roofline cuts into headroom.
The price to pay for the Toyota RAV4’s low-slung styling is tight headroom for taller passengers. It’s not cramped, but its 6 out of 10 rating reflects how its low roofline limits passenger space. It scores well enough for its big cargo area, though.
The sleek windshield translates into tight door openings up front. That means that some taller drivers may need to contort themselves to wedge in without banging their heads. Opt for the widely available sunroof and head space shrinks even more.
At least the front seats are reasonably supportive, though it takes stepping beyond the base LE for a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Second-row passengers will find good legroom but limited headroom.
Out back, the 37 cubic-foot cargo area balloons to 69 cubes when the second-row seatbacks are tilted forward. Note that Prime models have slightly less space inside due to their big battery packs.
Toyota doesn’t dress the RAV4 up with particularly luxurious materials, though the standard cloth and optional synthetic leather have a durable feel.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Safety
Toyota packs a lot of driver-assistance tech into its 2024 RAV4.
How safe is the Toyota RAV4?
It has done well in crash testing and it comes loaded with plenty of features designed to avoid a crash in the first place. We rate the 2024 RAV4 at 8 out of 10 thanks to a five-star rating from the NHTSA, a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, and gear including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control.
Blind-spot monitors and LED projector headlights are widely available options.
The RAV4’s downside is tricky rearward vision. Beefy roof pillars and a so-so backup camera mean we’d consider splurging for the available surround-view camera system.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Features
The huge RAV4 lineup means there’s a configuration for just about everyone.
Toyota offers a slew of RAV4 trim levels spread between three engine choices. This range starts south of $30,000 and can climb well north of $50,000, or even more if you’re willing to pay dealer markups common on Prime models. We rate the range at 8 out of 10 on account of reasonable standard fare, plentiful choice, and a decent touchscreen.
Base RAV4 LE models run about $29,000, or $30,500 with all-wheel drive. (Or $1,300 more in AWD-only hybrid guise.) They’re not exactly luxurious, but they get the job done with 17-inch steel wheels, cloth seats, adaptive cruise control, crash-avoidance tech, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Toyota’s 3-year/36,000-mile warranty includes two years of free basic maintenance.
Which Toyota RAV4 should I buy?
We’d skip the LE for the XLE. Its power-adjustable driver’s seat, blind-spot monitors, and alloy wheels are worthwhile upgrades, plus it’s the gateway to heated seats, automatic wipers, and a sunroof. An XLE Premium tosses in synthetic leather trim and automatic climate control, too.
In XLE Hybrid guise with optional heated seats, Toyota wants around $34,000. That’s about all the RAV4 most shoppers ever need.
Off-roaders might like the RAV4 Adventure with its rugged looks, but it takes nudging up to the $38,000-or-so TRD Off-Road for any additional capability. That model sits up a bit higher and has additional drive modes for rough-road going.
How much is a fully loaded Toyota RAV4?
The RAV4 Prime can work its way to $50,000 when fully equipped as an XSE with optional heated rear seats, head-up display, surround-view camera system, foot-activated power tailgate, and JBL audio. It also includes a bigger and brighter 10.5-inch touchscreen. It’s nice, but it’s also a questionable value against some luxury rivals.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Fuel Economy
All RAV4s are pretty frugal, but Hybrid and Prime versions boast Prius-grade thrift.
Is the Toyota RAV4 good on gas?
It’s a fuel-efficient small SUV, that’s for sure. Fuel economy varies by trim level and configuration, but even the few guzzlers in this lineup are frugal choices.
Base models with front-wheel drive general rate 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined. RAV4 LEs with all-wheel drive are the same, though other AWD models slide to 28 or 29 mpg combined. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road’s bulky tires and higher stance nudge it down to 25/32/28 mpg, which is still pretty good.
Hybrid models pay out quickly for some drivers. They’re rated at 41/38/40 mpg. Yes, you can really see 40 mpg from an AWD compact SUV with room for five passengers and their gear.
The RAV4 Prime is rated at 38 mpg combined, but the ace in its pocket is that a full charge unlocks around 42 miles of driving. That means a typical commuter could handle the trek to and from work—plus an errand or two—without a single drop of gasoline.
