The 2025 Toyota Sequoia is a big, well-designed full-size SUV with lots of tech and a high-quality feel.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Toyota Sequoia? What does it compare to?
The Sequoia is Toyota’s biggest SUV. It's a three-row, body-on-frame rival to the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada.
Is the 2025 Toyota Sequoia a good SUV?
The Sequoia is a strong overall SUV with a powerful V-6 engine, a massive interior, and impressive towing ability. It earns a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Toyota Sequoia?
A new 1794 trim level blends western kitsch with some nice luxury features such as massaging front seats and real walnut wood trim. In addition, as has become tradition, the TRD Pro trim level inaugurates the new color Mud Bath.
The Sequoia’s overstyled exterior gives way to a large, well-outfitted cabin. Each trim level has its own styling tweaks, with most versions emphasizing chrome and big wheels over subtlety.
Underhood, the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 teams up with an electric motor and a large battery pack to offer low-speed cruising in an all-electric mode and the ability to lug a trailer that weighs as much as 9,520 pounds. The Sequoia is impressively quick, even though the 10-speed automatic transmission can occasionally seem confused at highway speeds. Figure 20 to 22 mpg combined, which isn’t terrible for a big, powerful SUV.
With its long wheelbase, and soft standard suspension tuning, the Sequoia swallows up big bumps with ease. TRD Pro versions ride even better and they offer a modicum of off-road ability, so long as you can find a trail big enough for them. If you want a Sequoia with large wheels, though, make sure you’ve found one with adaptive dampers.
Inside, you’ll find great front seats and a comfortable second row, though the rearmost seats are best for kids. The Sequoia is spacious for cargo, too, but the hybrid battery pack means that the cargo floor isn’t as flat as it is in some competitors. Interior materials are good but not particularly fancy, even in the top Capstone and 1794 trim levels. Sure, those models have soft, rich leather, but there’s still a lot of hard plastic here and there.
Sequoias come with a good amount of crash-avoidance tech, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control, though there’s no hands-off driving system here as there is in some top competitors. A surround-view camera system is also standard.
How much does the 2025 Toyota Sequoia cost?
The base SR5 costs $64,120, including the $1,945 destination fee. Four-wheel drive adds $3,000 on the SR5 and Limited models, though it’s standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone, and the new 1794 trim. The base version is pretty well-outfitted with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, heated front seats, and a sunroof.
Where is the 2025 Toyota Sequoia made?
In San Antonio, Texas.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Styling
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia is a lot of SUV with a lot of design.
Is the Toyota Sequoia a good-looking SUV?
It’s a statement-maker, that’s for sure. The Sequoia has a blocky profile and chunky, overwrought details, all of which add up to a fairly busy design outside. It’s a little more cohesive—though still quite complicated—inside.
The Sequoia rates a 6 on the TCC scale overall for its attractive cabin.
Its exterior shares a lot in common up front with the big Tundra pickup, with no shortage of chrome touches on most configurations. From the side, its high beltline and forward-leaning rearmost roof pillar give it an almost sporty look. that beltline rises at the hood, impeding forward vision. At the rear, big, long taillights look neat and clean.
TRD Pro versions have a higher stance and beefier tires, plus blacked-out trim rather than shiny bits.
Most Sequoias have a huge 14.0-inch touchscreen that rises from the dashboard like a big-screen TV. It’s a hefty reach for anyone other than Stretch Armstrong. Otherwise, buttons and knobs for climate and audio controls are organized in a logical fashion, and Toyota put quite a bit of effort into sourcing interesting materials and colors to differentiate each trim level. No version is ultra-lavish, but then pricing here doesn’t veer into Escalade territory.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Performance
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia is a massive but well-behaved choice.
Toyota’s big SUV has a powerful V-6 engine and a comfortable, composed ride. It scores a 7 out of 10 on the TCC scale for acceleration/towing utility plus its ride quality.
Is the Toyota Sequoia 4WD?
Rear-wheel drive comes standard, while a simple part-time four-wheel-drive system not suitable for use on dry pavement is optional. That system stands in marked contrast to all-wheel-drive modes included in every major rival.
The TRD Pro is the off-roadiest version of the bunch. It sits only a bit higher off the ground, but its Fox shocks can soak up bumps particularly well. It sports bumpers revised for improved approach and departure angles, though it’s also a bit thirstier.
How fast is the Toyota Sequoia?
The Sequoia is a hybrid with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 paired with an electric motor and a big battery pack for a combined output of 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Fed through the 10-speed automatic transmission, all that power vaults the big Sequoia to 60 mph in a hint over six seconds. It’s quick, smooth, and it transitions well between EV mode at lower speeds to gasoline-electric mode otherwise. The automatic gearbox does well enough around town, but it can downshift far too often to maintain highway speeds when fully loaded up or when pushing through heavy wind.
The Sequoia can lug up to 9,520 pounds of trailer when properly equipped, which is impressive for a vehicle of this size.
Toyota includes a bunch of engine map-tweaking drive modes including Normal, Sport, and Eco, plus Sport+, and Comfort modes that also modify the available adaptive dampers. That setup is worthwhile if you’re swayed by bigger wheels, though the base Sequoia has enough rubber around its 18-inchers to ride comfortably. This large SUV also has an exceptionally long wheelbase that helps it feel stable at speed, but it’s not nimble at all. That said, the Sequoia handles curves fairly well and while it leans it's not bad for such a big vehicle. Its power steering has plenty of heft, too.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Comfort & Quality
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia’s huge interior has plenty of cargo space.
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia measures a garage-filling 208.1 inches long overall, and it can haul plenty of stuff inside. It gets points above average for its comfortable front and rear seats plus its big cargo area. Some competitors have more third-row space, though, and it takes stepping up to the swankiest of Sequoias for an upscale ambience.
All models have power-adjustable and heated front seats that are supportive and spacious. Cooled and massaging front seats are optional.
Row two can either be a three-piece bench or, optionally, a pair of captain’s chairs. While they lack the ability to slide forward and backward, they are spacious and well padded. The third row, however, is a bit tricky to access and it’s not all that spacious for adults. Even Toyota’s own Grand Highlander can accommodate adults in row three better than the Sequoia.
Additionally, the third row doesn’t quite fold flat into the floor thanks to the location of the hybrid battery. There’s a tiered cargo shelf that helps flatten out the space, but then the liftover height is quite high. Still, with up to 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space, this is one voluminous vehicle.
Standard cloth upholstery can be upgraded to synthetic leather on the base SR5. Other versions have varying grades of leather, though no Sequoia is quite as nice as a GMC Yukon Denali.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Safety
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia lacks crash-test data.
How safe is the Toyota Sequoia?
It’s big, heavy, and loaded with crash-avoidance features, but historically the IIHS and the NHTSA haven’t crash-tested it. Therefore, it lacks a rating here.
All models have automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, and a useful surround-view camera system. A rear camera mirror is available. Toyota doesn’t offer a hands-off system like Ford’s Blue Cruise or the Super Cruise system in Chevrolet and GMC rivals.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Features
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia is expensive, but nicely equipped in base SR5 trim.
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia rates an 8 out of 10 on the TCC scale thanks to its big touchscreen with good software, its standard fare, and its many configurations.
The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty includes two years of basic scheduled maintenance, which helps soften the blow of its hefty initial purchase price.
For $64,120, the Sequoia SR5 comes with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, cloth upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and plenty of crash-avoidance tech.
Which Toyota Sequoia should I buy?
The base SR5 is equipped pretty well overall, and stepping up to the Limited costs a staggering $6,400 to $70,520. We’re not sold that the larger 14.0-inch touchscreen, synthetic leather upholstery, power-folding third-row seats, and a hands-free power tailgate are worth that upcharge. The Platinum, with standard four-wheel drive runs $81,265, and adds leather upholstery and massaging front seats, among other luxury touches.
The $81,990 TRD Pro and its Fox shocks and raised ground clearance might appeal to weekenders who stray from the beaten path, while the $82,080 1794 adds a Texas-sized 10-4 with walnut and leather trim, heated and cooled front seats with massagers, second-row captain's chairs, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, and a tow tech package.
How much is a fully loaded Toyota Sequoia?
At $85,610, the Capstone trim has 22-inch alloy wheels, soft leather seats, and real wood trim. Expect the 1794 model to cost about the same or even more.
2025 Toyota Sequoia Fuel Economy
The 2025 Toyota Sequoia uses its hybrid tech for performance and a touch of frugality.
Is the Toyota Sequoia good on gas?
It’s not as bad as it could be, but nobody will ever call the 2025 Toyota Sequoia a miserly choice. It’s a 2 out of 10 here based on the 2024 model, though the 2025 model is unlikely to be rated much differently. Rear-wheel-drive versions scored 21 mpg city 24 highway, 22 combined using the EPA’s test, while four-wheel-drive models checked in at 19/22/20 mpg.
