Buying tip

Taller families should skip the sunroof, and though all-wheel drive is an affordable option, it’s unnecessary for mild climates.

What the 2024 Toyota Sienna lacks in flexibility, it makes up in efficiency.

What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Toyota Sienna? What does it compare to?

The 2024 Toyota Sienna is a family-friendly minivan that seats seven or eight passengers, complete with a standard hybrid powertrain and power-sliding side doors. It shares the space with the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Carnival.

Is the 2024 Toyota Sienna a good car?

Generally, yes, with good fuel efficiency and standard features. It would be better if not for some safety concerns and practicality quirks. The 2024 Sienna earns a TCC Rating of 6.7 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

What's new for the 2024 Toyota Sienna?

This year, Toyota makes minor tweaks to the Sienna’s feature and trim menu. A new XSE Premium package equips the mid-tier trim with leather upholstery, orange accent stitching, heated and cooled front seats, a driver’s seat with memory settings and 8-way power adjustability, a 7.0-inch digital information display, blind-spot monitors, and exterior auxiliary lighting. Base LE and XLE trims get tinted headlight housings, and some XSE models get dark-finished wheels.

Otherwise, LE, XLE, XLE Woodland, XSE, Limited, and Platinum trims carry over unchanged. All-wheel drive is available across the lineup, though front-wheel drive comes standard.

The Sienna isn’t conventionally handsome, for a minivan or otherwise, thanks to some heavy-handed details. Inside, the horizontal dash and tall center console make it feel cozier than it is, for better or for worse, and even in expensive Platinum trim, some materials and finishes fall short of rivals.

Every Sienna features a 2.5-liter inline-4 with a pair of electric motors and battery packs for a combined 245 hp, and a third electric motor drives the rear axle in all-wheel-drive models. A CVT does its job well, if not great. It’s the handling and ride that impress, with well-damped tuning and fast responses. Consider, too, the EPA’s 36-mpg combined rating for front-drive models, which falls short of only the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid plug-in.

Interior space is on par with other minivans on paper, though most rivals make better use of it. The second row offers the typical pair of captain’s chairs or a row of three seats that isn’t nearly as spacious as an actual bench, while the third row is less spacious than most competitors and also more challenging to fold away for extra storage.

The Sienna boasts an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, but the NHTSA’s five-star overall rating comes with caveats. The list of standard safety features is on par with the competition.

How much does the 2024 Toyota Sienna cost?

The Sienna LE starts at $38,580 and includes a 9.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration; all-wheel drive is $2,000 more. A handful more trim levels pad the lineup, topping out with the Platinum all-wheel-drive model for $54,800, which includes JBL audio and leather upholstery. It’s worth noting that only the base LE and XLE FWD models can be configured for eight passengers.

Where is the 2024 Toyota Sienna made?

In Indiana.

2024 Toyota Sienna Styling

The Sienna’s exterior approaches fun, while the cabin is all function.

Is the Toyota Sienna a good-looking car?

The 2024 Toyota Sienna combines sculpted curves and space-creating angles for a reasonably attractive shape that gets the job done. The exterior and interior each earn a point, for a 7.

It takes a special kind of person to call a minivan sexy, even taking their origin story into consideration. The Sienna’s an endearing vehicle regardless, even though its lines — swelling front fenders, muscular rears — combine with lots of angles and cuts for a look that borders on overkill. Base trims keep the look simple, while the Woodland rides higher and bolder.

Inside, the Sienna sticks closer to convention while still offering its own distinctive elements. Front passengers are separated by the tall center console, dressed in wood grain or metallic looks depending on trim. The big touchscreen is mounted like an afterthought, and the low dashboard looks sparse unless it’s dressed up in the premium Platinum trim palette.

2024 Toyota Sienna Performance

The Sienna’s acceleration suffers for its hybrid efficiency.

The 2024 Toyota Sienna does its job well enough. It earns a point for ride quality, though not for acceleration. It’s a 6.

Is the Toyota Sienna 4WD?

Yes, easily and affordably enough. Front-wheel drive comes standard on all but the XLE Woodland, where all-wheel drive is included. All other trims can be upgraded from front- to all-wheel drive for $2,000 or less. The Sienna’s AWD hybrid setup adds a third electric motor on the rear axle but doesn’t combine the front and rear power distribution, which maximizes fuel efficiency. It’s not one of the most robust AWD systems, but it’s effective.

How fast is the Toyota Sienna?

Not at all. The Sienna combines a 4-cylinder gas engine and either a pair or trio of electric motors, for front- and all-wheel drive versions, respectively. A CVT is tasked with modulating its 245 hp in favor of efficiency. The hybrid boost provides good low-end power, but the faster you try to go, the slower it feels.

Ride quality shines, though, on par with the Kia Carnival and Chrysler Pacifica. With its controlled body lean, good steering feedback, and smooth overall ride, the Sienna could easily wear a Lexus badge. Its road manners best many of its Toyota SUV stablemates, and brake control and feel is better than you might expect if you’ve driven other Toyota hybrids.

2024 Toyota Sienna Comfort & Quality

Toyota works the minivan magic only so far with the Sienna.

The 2024 Sienna is available in seven- and eight-passenger configurations, though both fall short of some rival minivans in terms of flexibility. It’s a 7, dragged down by an odd second-row layout.

The Sienna provides fantastic front seats, which wear cloth in base models but provide thick bolstering for all-day comfort. Upper trim levels get synthetic leather or real leather, and can be heated and cooled.

The standard power-sliding doors reveal the eight-passenger configuration, available only in base trims, which eschews a true bench in favor of a skinny middle seat inadequate for adults, or the seven-passenger configuration with captain’s chairs and folding footrests. With a true middle bench on offer, we’d award another point for quality. In both cases, the second-row outboard seats slide for easier third-row access and extra legroom.

The Sienna provides less space in the third row than the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey, and the claustrophobia effect is exacerbated with tiny back windows.

The Sienna’s cargo area measures 33.5 cubic feet, and a manual latch collapses the third row to open up 75.2 cubic feet. The second-row seats must be removed, a process requiring tools, to open up the maximum 101.0 cubes. That said, there’s plenty of cubbies and pockets for small items.

2024 Toyota Sienna Safety

Good safety tech helps offset the Sienna’s mixed crash-test ratings.

How safe is the Toyota Sienna?

The 2024 Sienna comes with a competitive list of standard safety features and earns the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ rating. We award a point for each, for a 7.

The NHTSA gives the Sienna an overall five-star rating despite a four-star score for front-impact testing, which factors in a concerning three-star score for the driver front impact test.

Toyota equips the Sienna with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alerts, active lane control, and automatic high beams. Options include a surround-view camera system, head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, and a digital rearview mirror with a camera view.

With small side windows and thick roof pillars, the Sienna has poor outward vision to the sides and rear, so those optional cameras might be worth the money.

2024 Toyota Sienna Features

Toyota loads on the amenities and prices the Sienna accordingly.

The 2024 Toyota Sienna comes with plenty of standard equipment, including a good infotainment system. It’s an 8 for the base models’ overall value.

The Sienna’s 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is just average.

Which Toyota Sienna should I buy?

The base Sienna LE, at $38,580 including a $1,395 destination charge, is well equipped with plenty of safety features, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and power-sliding side doors. It costs $2,000 to add all-wheel drive, though it’s less expensive on some trim levels.

The Sienna XLE, $43,890, adds synthetic leather upholstery and a sunroof, though taller drivers should note that the sunroof compromises headroom. This year, LE and XLE models both gain darkened chrome headlights for a subtle but endearing visual upgrade.

The Sienna XSE starts at $46,140 and is available with a new Premium package that includes leather upholstery, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory functions, a memory-function adjustable steering column, orange accent stitching, a 7-inch digital display, puddle lamps, and blind-spot monitors.

We wouldn’t spend beyond the Sienna Limited’s $50,840. That gets leather upholstery, cooled front seats, second-row seats with fold-out footrests, a JBL audio system, and a cabin intercom system.

How much is a fully loaded Toyota Sienna?

The 2024 Sienna Platinum with all-wheel drive starts at $54,800.

5

2024 Toyota Sienna Fuel Economy

With its standard hybrid powertrain, the 2024 Toyota Sienna proves minivans don’t need to be fuel hogs.

Is the Toyota Sienna good on gas?

Yes. With front-wheel drive, the Toyota Sienna is EPA-rated at 36 mpg city, highway, and combined. With all-wheel drive, it loses just 1 mpg from city and combined ratings. It’s a 5.

Most minivans turn in a combined rating somewhere in the 20s, according to the EPA, so the Sienna is a great choice for fuel economy. Only the plug-in Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is more efficient, with a 30-mpg combined rating and electric range of 32 miles.
