  • Highs Almost limitless configurations, smooth and efficient engines, surprisingly good ride and handling.

  • Verdict With its pleasant driving dynamics, multiple configurations, and up-to-date amenities, the Transit is a top choice among full-size vans.

Overview

The Transit is Ford’s full-size van, available with or without side windows, with optional double-side doors, sliding doors, or no side doors. There are 58 possible configurations for use as a delivery van, a family mini-van, or as a recreational vehicle by an aftermarket outfitter. Based on the European Ford Transit introduced in the U.K. in 1965, the first transit sold in North America was introduced in the 2015 model year and assembled in the automaker’s Kansas City plant, to replace the aged E-van (Econoline), which continues as a cutaway cab/stripped chassis only. The Ford Transit is available in three lengths; 226.3-inches long on a 129.9 wheelbase and 237.6 inches or 266.1 inches on a 147.6-inch wheelbase. And it comes in standard roof heights from 83.2- to 83.5 inches and high-roof versions from 100.8- to 110.2 inches.

What's New for 2017?

The 2017 Ford Transit is upgraded with a new walk-through style center console between the front seats to allow more space for computer equipment in commercial applications. Heated driver’s and front passenger seats, in cloth or leather, are new options. Power-adjusted 10-way seats can now be ordered for all Transit variations.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While the old Econoline van relied on V-8s for decent power, the Transit is offered with the choice of three six-cylinder engines, all paired with a six-speed automatic and powering the rear wheels. The base engine is a 275-hp 3.7-liter V-6. There’s also a 185-hp 3.2-liter turbodiesel V-6 that produces 350 pound-feet of torque and Ford’s direct-injection turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, making 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Any engine choice will easily propel a loaded Transit in traffic, and either gas engine is a standout for smoothness and efficiency. The Transit is surprisingly quick and agile, and with its short hood, big windshield, low side glass, and rearview camera, it's exceedingly easy to drive, even if you’re not used to big trucks.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Transit's cabin can be outfitted from fairly basic to surprisingly deluxe. The available heated leather or cloth seats are unique among vans in this segment. Passenger versions are available in eight-, 10-, 12- or 15-seat configurations, whereas the Mercedes Sprinter’s maximum seating is only 12 and the other prime competitor, Ram Promaster, is cargo-only).

Upgrades include navigation and a premium audio system with satellite radio.
