Overview

The Ford Transit provides value and versatility for everyone from large families to skilled tradesmen. The full-size Ford van can be configured with three different roof heights (low, medium, and high) as well as three separate lengths (regular, long, and extended). The Transit passenger van can seat up to 15, while the Transit cargo van has an open cargo area sans side windows. It ranks among the best vans on the market and occupies a spot on our Editors' Choice list. An updated version arrives for 2020, with more contemporary features and refreshed powertrains.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

The Transit currently offers three distinct engines: a standard 275-hp V-6, a 310-hp twin-turbo V-6, and a diesel-powered five-cylinder that makes 350 lb-ft of torque. All engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The new-for-2020 Transit adds available all-wheel drive and replaces every engine except the twin-turbo V-6 with a more powerful version. Likewise, the company's 10-speed automatic will become the sole transmission choice. Still, the current Transit cargo van can tow up to 7500 pounds and the passenger van tops out at 5100 pounds. The last version we tested was the cargo van outfitted with the medium roof and middle body length and powered by the potent twin-turbo V-6. Not only was it surprisingly quick, accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, it was also surprisingly agile and easy to control.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Ford Transit's cargo volume and passenger space varies between the multiple body styles and roof heights along with the long and short wheelbases. Although standard features are unremarkable, the list of desirable options is relatively extensive. The Transit can be had with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, lane-keeping assist, power running boards, rear parking sensors, and more. Once the 2020 Ford Transit goes on sale this fall, it will have considerably more high-tech equipment. This includes standard automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and lane-keeping assist while adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring will be optional. The infotainment system will support an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.
