Overview

Ford no longer makes a minivan or a station wagon, but the Transit Connect combines the best of both worlds in a compact package. The highly practical city van is available with either a short or long wheelbase and can be ordered as a stripped-out cargo van or a configurable passenger van. The 2019 Ford Transit Connect boasts numerous improvements versus the 2018 version, including a newly available engine and updated driver-assistance technology. Ford has canceled the Transit Connect's previously announced diesel engine.

Engine, Ride, and Handling

The van's standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 150 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque and replaces the previously available 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It features automatic stop/start technology and pairs exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The Transit Connect can also tow up to 2000 pounds and carry a maximum payload of 1570 pounds. Despite the updated engine, the city van has the same underpinnings since the last time we drove a long-wheelbase model. That version felt very agile around town thanks to its accurate steering and well-controlled body motions. However, it bounced driving over uneven pavement and had irregular tracking on the highway.

Interior and Technology

The Transit Connect's front seat will look familiar regardless of whether it's the cargo or passenger van. The latter can be had with a third row that enables seating for up to seven. Every model has a low seating height that emulates a car rather than a truck or crossover. The dashboard incorporates an ergonomic center stack that features physical controls for the climate control and infotainment system. The cargo van offers up to 127 cubic feet of cargo volume while the passenger van provides up to 105 cubes with the second and third rows folded. Desirable options include a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, dual-zone automatic climate control, and wireless charging. Likewise, the Transit Connect can be equipped with driver assists such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and more.
