features & specs
The 2024 VW Tiguan presents a solid argument with its spacious cabin and impressive technology features, though fuel efficiency falls short.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan? What does it compare to?
The Tiguan is VW’s value-oriented compact crossover that offers a spacious and comfortable alternative to SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.
Is the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan a good SUV?
Well-equipped and spacious, the Tiguan offers a friendly approach to performance and plenty of value. We rate it at 6.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan?
For 2024, VW’s IQ.DRIVE suite of driver-assistance tech comes standard across the Tiguan lineup, with features such as adaptive cruise control and active lane control. Other new standard features on the base S trim include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A mid-year update will upgrade the infotainment system and add wireless charging.
The 2024 VW Tiguan is closely related to the cheaper, smaller, and less-powerful Volkswagen Taos. Conservative and clean exterior styling continues inside, which includes snug third-row seats in front-wheel-drive versions. Under the hood, a 184-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged-4 produces decent pep, with an 8-speed automatic gearbox that provides smooth shifts. The VW Tiguan gives a comfortable, yielding ride, though R-Line trims, with larger wheels, can be somewhat stiff. However, EPA ratings of 25 or 26 mpg combined are toward the thirsty end of the small crossover segment.
On the upside, the Tiguan boasts a spacious interior with fantastic second-row seating and generous cargo space. Its simple dash includes an intuitive infotainment system and standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with wireless compatibility as an option.
There’s a comprehensive standard list of crash-avoidance tech, but the Tiguan hasn’t impressed either the IIHS or the NHTSA with its accident-avoidance features or its crashworthiness.
How much does the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
The Tiguan range starts at $30,305, including a $1,425 destination fee. All-wheel drive adds about $1,500. It’s offered in S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line at the top for $40,305, but that model has all-wheel drive standard..The base trim should satisfy most, though families will probably appreciate the easy-clean synthetic leather upholstery on the mid-level SE model. That also includes wireless smartphone integration and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Where is the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan made?
In Mexico.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Styling
Conservative lines give the 2024 Tiguan a look that blends in rather than standing out.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan a good-looking car?
Yes, it looks nice enough, with conservative yet pleasant lines. The exterior earns a point for a 6 here.
The 2024 Tiguan’s front end wears a narrow grille flanked by headlights that wrap towards the front fenders. There’s little visual flair over the traditional two-box shape, and the rear badging is minimalist and elegant. The R-Line models are a little flashier, but not necessarily for the better.
The cabin is simple, too. Most visual interest comes from the 8.0-inch instrument display and the 8.0-inch touchscreen mounted on the low dash. There’s a choice of interior colors, but none are different or noteworthy.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Performance
A composed and confident ride is the 2024 Tiguan’s best performance attribute.
The Tiguan S and SE trims have a comfortable ride that earns a point for a 6 here.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan 4WD?
All Tiguan trims can be fitted with all-wheel drive.
How fast is the Volkswagen Tiguan?
The Tiguan makes 184 hp from its 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine, which comes paired with a smooth-shifting 8-speed auto transmission. This combination handles cruising and passing duties well, though the Tiguan’s acceleration from a stop is on the slow side.
Ride quality is where the Tiguan truly shines, with a soft-tuned independent suspension system that works best with the base trims’ 17- or 18-inch wheels. The R-Line trims may look sportier with their 19- and 20-inch wheel options, though they detract from the ride somewhat.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Comfort & Quality
The big cabin impresses, but the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan makes no pretense of luxury.
The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan uses its interior space wisely, earning a 7 here for its spacious rear seats and big cargo area.
The front seats are on the firm side, and come heated across the lineup although driver’s-seat power adjustment isn’t available on the base trim.
All-wheel drive models are only available with two rows, and in this configuration offer an impressive 38.7 inches of legroom and almost 38 cubic feet of cargo space. That opens up to 73.4 cubic feet with the second row folded.
A third row comes standard with front-wheel drive models, and eats into both second-row and cargo space, but may be worth it for families with small kids.
The Tiguan’s cabin is welcoming and comfortable across the lineup, but doesn’t feel particularly upscale, even in top trims.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Safety
For 2024, the Tiguan adds new standard safety tech but suffers mixed crash-test results.
How safe is the Volkswagen Tiguan?
The Tiguan earns 6 out of 10 here. It gets new standard tech this year but no longer attains the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick status. In NHTSA evaluations, the Tiguan earns four stars overall, with a footnote that the driver’s door unlatched and opened during side impact testing.
The Tiguan now comes standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE package, which incorporates active lane control, adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot monitors with steering support, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and emergency assist if the driver becomes unresponsive. A surround-view camera system is optional.
The Tiguan provides excellent outward vision to the front, but like most crossovers, that vision is compromised to the rear and sides.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Features
Stick to the lower trims to get the 2024 Tiguan at its best value.
The 2024 VW Tiguan earns 8 out of 10 with its strong list of standard features, big infotainment display, and competitive 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with two years of scheduled maintenance.
The base Tiguan S sees a price increase of a couple thousand bucks this year to $30,305. The Tiguan is well equipped for that money, with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, cloth upholstery, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Which Volkswagen Tiguan should I buy?
The SE with all-wheel drive is a good value at about $35,000. It also gets synthetic leather upholstery, wireless smartphone compatibility, and 18-inch wheels.
How much is a fully loaded Volkswagen Tiguan?
For 2024, the SEL R-Line comes to about $41,000. That includes a 10.3-inch digital instrument display, premium audio, a sunroof, and slightly sportier styling.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Fuel Economy
A hybrid option would be a great addition to the Tiguan lineup.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan good on gas?
Not really. The EPA rates the base front-wheel-drive Tiguan S at 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined; larger wheel and tire combos on other models lowers it 1 mpg. With all-wheel drive, it gets 22/29/25 mpg. That’s a 3.
R-Line models slide to 22/29/24 mpg.
Some all-wheel-drive rivals achieve 30 mpg or more in highway driving. A Tiguan hybrid would go a long way toward improving VW’s competitiveness in efficiency.
