  • Highs Aggressive stance, business-class-like interior design, extremely agile for a small SUV.
  • Lows Less practical than an X1, more expensive than an X1, BMW’s stingy with tech and active safety features.
  • Verdict A sportier take on the well-rounded X1, the X2 is less practical but should appeal to SUV buyers who care more about handling than cargo space.

Overview

The 2018 BMW X2 puts a priority on agility and racy design over mundane things like, say, rear headroom and cargo space. Based on the boxier X1, the X2 is roughly 3 inches shorter and sits nearly 3 inches lower than its more practical sibling. Power comes from a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder paired to an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive comes along for the ride should you choose to upgrade to the xDrive model. Brisk off the line and agile through corners, the X2 is a delight to drive. Just don’t expect tall adults seated in the second row to enjoy it for too long.

What's New for 2018?

The X2 is a new addition to the BMW lineup for the 2018 model year. While the basic structure is borrowed from the pre-existing X1, the X2 is meant to evoke a leaner and meaner approach to crafting a subcompact luxury SUV. From the outside looking in, it’s hard to argue that BMW didn’t nail the aggressive look.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder motivates the X2, just like it does the X1. While it doesn’t boast mega horsepower figures, this is a refined and extremely eager powerplant that comes mated to a capable eight-speed automatic transmission. It loves to rev, doesn’t guzzle gas, and scoots the X2 down the road with ease. The steering is equally entertaining, especially when the road ahead is filled with sharp curves. An optional M Sport suspension tightens things up further, though it could prove way too firm for the more casual SUV shopper.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

From the driver’s perspective, the M2 delivers a clear no-nonsense dashboard and supportive seating to keep from sliding around during hard cornering. Granted, despite the X2’s considerable price hike compared to the X1, the cabins are awfully similar. To be fair, the X2 offers a substantial range of interior trims, color options, and choice of faux or genuine leather. Rear headroom will be snug for tall adults, however, and rear visibility is poor. Cargo capacity is also down by about 5 cubic feet compared to what you get in the X1.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The X2's base infotainment screen measures in at only 6.6 inches. Apple CarPlay is standard, but Android Auto is not offered at all. An optional 8.8-inch touchscreen brings with it navigation and a head-up display. Other tech touches include Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, and a Harman Kardon stereo. In terms of usability, the BMW iDrive interface lets you choose between using the touchscreen or the console-mounted rotary knob. It’s a slick and intuitive system.
