Overview

For those like us who have been disappointed in the most recent batch of BMWs, which have seemingly forsaken driving verve, we’ve got good news: The verve is back! Surprisingly, it has returned not in the form of a BMW sedan but in the all-new X3 crossover. Poised for success with a dual-purpose nature, it should appeal to luxury-crossover shoppers and enthusiast drivers alike. The xDrive30i model comes with a sweet turbocharged four-cylinder, standard all-wheel drive, and a premium cabin. Power-hungry buyers will want to try the X3 M40i, which utilizes BMW’s brilliant turbocharged inline-six to muscle its way down the road.

What's New for 2018?

BMW’s compact crossover is all new from the ground up for 2018, and it’s much improved compared with its previous generation. The X3 is one of the better-driving BMWs currently available, and we’re hoping this return to driving enthusiasm carries over to other new mainstream—read, “non–M Performance division”—BMWs coming down the pike.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

BMW offers the X3 in two flavors: the mild xDrive30i and the spicy M40i. They deliver peppy and ripping acceleration, respectively, and the eight-speed automatic transmission to which they are both paired swaps cogs smoothly and quickly. With the 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder under its hood, the standard X3 xDrive30i provides just enough power to comfortably negotiate almost any traffic situation. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission always seems to be in the right gear at the right time, which makes the most of the available power. Those seeking a more performance-oriented crossover will find the X3 M40i more to their liking. A 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder delivers almost brutish power, out-accelerating all but the most potent versions of the Porsche Macan Turbo and the Mercedes-AMG GLC43. On the road, the new X3 feels more competent than some of BMW’s current sedans. It’s fun to drive and willing to arc around corners better than expected, although it doesn’t quite offer Porsche Macan levels of athleticism. The ride quality is well balanced with just enough firmness for an inspired feel without resulting in a rough ride over bumpy road surfaces. Our test vehicle came with an option we highly recommend, the adaptive suspension. Called Dynamic Damper Control, it adds Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes to the xDrive30i. An adaptive M suspension, available on the M40i, also lowers the chassis 0.4 inch.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest and most accurate fuel economy numbers on current and older vehicles, we use the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov website. Under the heading "Find & Compare Cars" click on the "Compare Side-by-Side" tool to find the EPA ratings for the make, model, and year you're interested in.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Undeniably upscale, the X3’s well-equipped cabin treats occupants to comfort and solitude and gets even more luxurious with the addition of option packages or by selecting higher trim levels. Front-seat interior space is vast, and even the tallest folks should easily find it a comfortable place to settle into. Most rear-seat passengers will find little to complain about, but those with long legs may feel the pinch. The X3’s stylish interior comes well equipped before you check a single option box. 10-way power-adjustable front seats, which include adjustable side bolsters, make it easy to find a comfortable position. Rear-seat occupants are treated to reclining seatbacks, and the cushioning on all seats is plush enough for long journeys. The rest of the X3’s cabin is handsome and put together competently, with well-chosen materials and tight panel gaps. The glossy woodgrain trim on our test vehicle looked and felt real despite being plastic, and the stitched leatherette dash and door coverings added an extra element of luxury, as did the nickel-finish metal trim. The X3 boasts a voluminous cargo area: 63 cubic feet with the rear seats dropped. Stashing small items throughout the cabin is a snap, with a variety of useful and spacious cubbies. Our xDrive30i test vehicle was equipped with the optional spare tire ($150) located under the cargo floor. Not only does this raise the cargo floor slightly, it also significantly reduces the size of the underfloor storage bin.

Infotainment and Connectivity

BMW’s iDrive infotainment system provides almost a full complement of standard features, including Apple CarPlay, but it lacks a few staples, such as Android Auto and an auxiliary input jack. Both available displays employ intuitive and responsive software. A small, 6.5-inch infotainment display is standard, but go for the Premium package, which includes navigation and the much larger and crisper 10.3-inch display. Bluetooth phone connectivity and one USB port are standard; a second port is optional. BMW’s standard 12-speaker audio system should satisfy most listeners, but serious music lovers will want to consider the optional Harman/Kardon setup. This upgraded system adds four extra speakers to the mix but requires buyers to first pony up for the Premium or Executive packages—or the performance-oriented M40i model—and then pay an additional $875. Either way, Bluetooth audio streaming is standard.
